Sedation Dentistry for Anxious Patients

There are many reasons why Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan offers our patients anesthesia for an upcoming dental procedure. Some patients are “dental phobic” and avoid seeking the dental care they need out of fear. Many people simply experience varying levels of anxiety while in the dentist’s office. Still others dread the discomfort associated with lengthy dental procedures. If any of these situations apply to you, you might want to consider sedation dentistry. Please read on to understand more and see some of our frequently asked questions.

What type of Anesthesia will I be offered?

At Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan you will be offered conscious sedation- what many often refer to as, “twilight sleep”. You will be breathing on your own, and are typically able to respond to verbal commands. Medications will be administered by the anesthesiologist through a small intravenous catheter. Intravenous sedation will allow you to achieve a much more relaxed and pain-free state than can be offered through oral sedatives alone.
The level of sedation will be continually monitored and adjusted according to your needs, the procedure being performed, and any pre-existing medical conditions you may have. The anesthesiologist will obtain a thorough medical history and answer all of your questions before the anesthetic begins.

Is Anesthesia for my dental procedure a safe alternative?

Yes. There are approximately 40 million anesthetics provided in the U.S. per year, with 90% of these performed by an anesthesiologist. Each year, more and more procedures are being done under anesthesia outside the hospital and in physician offices. Advances in the science and technology of anesthesiology have made anesthetics very safe in appropriate candidates when administered by qualified anesthesiologists. Your anesthesiologist is an M.D. who has completed a minimum of 4 years in residency training, and has achieved board certification in his or her specialty. Your anesthesiologist will continuously monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure, assuring your safety and comfort.

Who are the anesthesiologists at Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan?

Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan is pleased to have partnered with North American Partners in Anesthesia (“NAPA”) to offer our patients a safe, comfortable, and relaxed approach to dental procedures, free of pain and anxiety. NAPA is one of the largest, and nation’s leading practices dedicated to patient safety in the delivery of anesthesia. NAPA has leveraged its vast experience and physician skill-sets in setting safety standards, and ensuring a safe clinical environment in all of its practice locations. NAPA physician anesthesiologists are board certified, and practice at some of New York City’s most prestigious hospitals. You will be secure in knowing that your anesthesiologist is continually challenged in a hospital operating room environment, and therefore ready to respond appropriately in any situation.

Where will my procedure take place?

Your procedure will be right here in our state-of-the-art office. Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan has recently updated the office to include an out-patient surgical wing. Conveniently located near Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, Manhattan, New York, our office can offer you everything you’ll need in one location.

What happens after the procedure?

You will be monitored in a separate recovery area following your dental procedure. During this time, a dedicated staff member will monitor your recovery from anesthesia, including your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation). Once you are considered stable, you will be discharged from the office, typically within 30-60 minutes after completion of the procedure.

Are there any special instructions if I choose to have anesthesia for my procedure?

If your dentist agrees that anesthesia is an appropriate option for you, you will be scheduled for your procedure on a day dedicated to sedation dentistry procedures. You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your procedure, and will need to have a responsible adult with you when you leave, to ensure your safe passage home. Although you will be asked to complete a short medical survey before your procedure, NAPA (North American Partners in Anesthesia) anesthesiologists are happy to see you at Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan in advance of your procedure to address any special medical issues that may be of concern.
