Bacteria, Plaque and Cavities…oh my! If we don’t brush our teeth before bed, plaque builds up on our teeth and gums. Throughout the day, the food we eat sticks to our teeth and harbors bacteria. When the bacteria aren’t removed in a timely manner, it hardens onto our teeth. This becomes extremely difficult to remove and needs to be cleaned by a dentist.
When teeth aren’t brushed at night, we’re creating a healthy environment… for plaque. This is extremely harmful to our oral health because plaque causes cavities and eventual tooth loss if not properly cared for. Bacteria can also cause gum disease, which must be monitored and treated immediately to prevent receding gum lines and other serious conditions, such as periodontal disease.
Did you know that dry mouth increases your chances of tooth decay? This is another reason why it’s important to brush and floss our teeth before bed! While asleep, we don’t create much saliva. This causes dry mouth and makes our teeth more susceptible to plaque buildup. By brushing our teeth before bed, we rid our mouths of any food and sugar deposits and prevent dry mouth from using those bacteria to harm our teeth.
