Pediatric After Care

Helping caring for your child’s teeth after a visit to the dental is very important to make sure they follow the medical advice. We make sure that every parent leaves Premier Dental Associates understanding the aftercare instructions for their child:

Dental Cleanings

After a dental cleaning, your child may experience some discomfort and gum bleeding. This is completely normal. If it continues at home, help your child rinse their mouth with a salt and water wash. Mix ½ tsp salt with 8oz of water. This will help heal the gums and rid of any bacteria that could build up and cause an infection.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps keep our teeth strong and healthy by slowing the breakdown of enamel and speeding the remineralization process after damage. A fluoride treatment is a booster to the fluoride found in municipal water and toothpaste, providing a stronger concentration that protects a child’s developing teeth. Performed every six months, it is important to have your child wait 30 minutes after their fluoride treatment before eating to ensure the fluoride sticks.

Tooth sealants (also called fissure sealants) are special coatings placed on your child’s permanent molars to prevent decay, preventing bacteria from building up in the grooves of a tooth. Following a tooth sealant, help your child to avoid sticky foods such as gum or candy for 24 hours to ensure the sealant sticks.

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are needed for an array of reasons, including to prevent teeth overcrowding and to allow their adult teeth to grow in. After tooth removal, your child should relax and enjoy easy to eat foods such as yogurt and pudding. Make sure that your child does not touch the area of the tooth extraction to avoid infection. Your child should also refrain from using straws and rinsing their teeth for at least 2 days.
