Ahhh, it’s that time of year again…summer! Summer is all about beautiful weather, being with family and friends, and attending outdoor events! To keep your smile looking bright and fresh all summer long after a whitening treatment at our office, we’ve gathered together our top tips.
But first, what causes your teeth to become discolored anyway? Stains can develop on your enamel, the protective outer layer of your tooth, or on the dentin layer underneath. When the enamel becomes thin, the brownish dentin layer underneath your enamel becomes more exposed.
What exactly causes your enamel to erode? Foods and beverages that are highly acidic and sugary, such as fruits, candy and coffee, can damage your teeth. Your enamel can also become thin and discolored from cigarettes, dry mouth, antibiotics and even aging.
So, how can you keep your teeth strong and protect them against stains and discoloration? Let’s find out:
- Floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day! To keep your enamel strong, make sure to gently brush for two minutes with a fluoride-based toothpaste. It is also important to change your toothbrush every three months. Choose a medium or soft brush.
- Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat apples or raw veggies! This helps flush away harmful bacteria. Make sure to use a straw if you drink tooth-staining beverages, such as coffee.
- Rinse, rinse, and rinse! After a meal, it is best to rinse your mouth with water. This will help you get rid of food or sugars that may have gotten stuck in your teeth while eating. This will help rid of plaque buildup.
