The Importance of a Dental Exam

Visiting Premier Dental Associates for regular exams twice a year (or otherwise recommend by our dentists) is important for your health. Dental cleanings ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy. Dental exams can also detect other dental issues such as tooth impaction and loose teeth. Let’s take a closer look:

Tooth Decay

Some areas of your teeth are hard to clean. Because of this, dental plaque and tartar can form. Tarter is extremely difficult to remove and can cause cavities if not attended to by a dental professional. A dental exam allows our dentists to spot decay, plaque, and dental tarter right away. During your exam, our dentists will be able to remove the plaque, floss and polish your teeth, and guide you with your at-home dental care routine.

Gum Disease

Plaque and tartar can also lead to gum infections, such as gingivitis. If left untreated, the gums around your teeth can start to pull away and break down the bone that keeps your teeth in place. During a dental exam, our experts are able to detect any gum infections and treat them right away.

What’s going on below your gumline? X-rays will help us uncover possible dental issues, such as wisdom teeth impaction (teeth that are blocked below the gumline) jawbone deterioration, cysts and tumors. If you’re concerned about the use of x-rays, our dental experts will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Other Examinations

During your dental exam, our dentists will also look for the following:
  • Misaligned and crooked teeth
  • Damaged fillings
  • Check neck, head and jaw joints (TMJ)
