The Surprising Link Between Water and Your Teeth

We all know water has many benefits for our overall health, such as aiding digestion, rehydrating us, and even energizing us. But, did you know that water can help protect your teeth from decay? Water has the power to strengthen and protect your teeth, all while keeping your mouth clean! At Premier Dental Associates of Lower Manhattan, it is important to us that our patients’ teeth remain healthy! Let’s take a closer look at H2O:

Water acts a cleanser! That’s right, water helps flush out harmful bacteria and keeps our teeth cavity free! As learned in a previous blog post, teeth damaging beverages such as soda contain a high content of sugar. Sugar is broken down and creates harmful acids that feed on our teeth. We don’t want that to happen! So instead, let’s swap out that soda for a nice cold glass of refreshing water! After all, water does not have any calories and contains fluoride, which will keep your teeth strong…take that, plaque!

Need another reason to drink more water? If you have ever experienced dry mouth, you know that it can be uncomfortable and frustrating, not to mention embarrassing! If you do not know what dry mouth is, it is when your mouth does not produce enough saliva. Saliva flushes out harmful bacteria, decreases acidity in your mouth, and protects your teeth against decay. Dry mouth can have several causes, such as medication or chronic dehydration. Water works to re-mineralize our teeth with calcium and phosphates, helping shield them against enamel damage.

Even something as simple as drinking water can help maintain your oral health and mean fewer visits to the dentist for cavities! However, remember that it is still important to visit us twice a year for regular checkupsand to keep up your oral health at home by brushing and flossing your teeth every day. Now all that’s left to do is to grab a glass of water and let it work its magic!
